Inspiration from technology

by managingit @ 2008-04-22 - 23:43:29

Can we take inspiration from technology? Technology allows us to lead better lives, so why not take ideas from those advancements in human achievement and build on them?

Original ideas are great, and they work.

Unlike some trendy Scandinavian web guru, I live in the UK.

I do love Scandinavian styling, from their beautiful minimalistic furniture to their tasteful simple clothing. I believe that their influences should be emulated whenever possible.

My aim on this, my first blog, is to let you understand my industry from my personal point of view. An insight into an industry which I have grown into and love from the bottom of my coffee cup.

This is my blog. A place for me to write my thoughts as they come, and not just a place to plug my proudest achievements to date.

I know you may be reading this because you have just started out in business or currently manage a business. I know this because a few years ago I was you.

I must point out also that I will not be maintaining this blog more than once per month as I will be too busy running my international empire. I also take no responsibility for any spelling mistakes, poor grammar or punctuation witnessed here is not a typical representation of my usual standard of work.

Theres so much to do when you're running a well known SME and trying to fulfill the needs of your ever expanding international client base. The internet has allowed me, a 25 year old to run a professional web development company and to offer a range of services which help businesses blossom online.

I am realistic in the sense that I know my own worth. With no project too extraordinary to assess for viability, such as remote control / monitoring, or projects which involve the use of hardware such as bar code scanners interfacing with database driven inventory software, I know that we can produce just about anything.

A confidence is born from my passion, visible only when I an talking about my work. Just please stop calling me out of office hours! Even super-humans like me need a break.

My days of working through the night to meet deadlines are most certainly not over. When you only move to satisfy one of natures basic requirements and get encapsulated in the programming or design of your task, it cannot be good for your health. High traffic sites or websites with strict deadlines to meet are quoted accordingly.

Budget is important. When a client has a large budget to spend I find that extra time can be spent on the project, fuelling inspired ideas and original digital art.

I started the company back in 2006 after I noticed that I could charge a fee for my time as a passionate geek with an eye for design. Lots of self-promotion and the adventure that is 'business' have shaped me into the person writing this blog.

As my range of services grew I was able to create new revenue streams and provide a better experience for my clients. Learning multiple programming languages enabled me to charge more per hour and enabled me to realise my worth.

If you want to see what I have learned from my time working as a self employed free-lance web design and development company read on, otherwise click here.

I mean, where do we start? To offer the services that we designers and developers do, lots of time is consumed on the various stages needed for a modern day website to operate as it needs to. The production model I have had to devise ensures that this can be achieved as quickly as possible.

I have found that to get the best results for the client's budget I need to be able to spend as little time on each phase of production as possible. This enables me to concentrate on more challenging areas such as promotion, if the client has ordered it as part of their contract.

I never did complete my course and get a degree in Information Architecture, instead I jumped into this line of work with both feet thanks to my curious nature and my thirst for knowledge.

Creating solutions for companies with annual turnovers in their millions has made me who I am.

When you go it alone in our industry (I can say 'our' now because I know you are involved in website design, interface design, programming, optimization, web marketing or promotion) no one provides you with a formula for success, sometimes finding someone who fully understands your problems and appreciates the ideas you have is difficult.

The answer, outsourcing. If there is an area which you don't feel 100% comfortable doing yourself, or if you are faced with lots of work to do, find someone to help you with a or several tasks. Having to cope on my own for so long had given me enough experience in each field to create some quite unique projects.

When I started to outsource, I found myself with more time to improve my skills in my favorite roles.

With extra staff, I was actually able to criticize my own work and improve content & design, and with the feedback of my clients, we crafted a powerful alternative, next generation e-commerce website platform.

Why? because I think our competitors suck. Some free and commercial scripts I have seen (and probably tried) just didnt work for me. Bad visual design and a lack of intelligent features are usually the case for these now pre-historic solutions,- even our competitors buy our product to compare code. I personally find this quite flattering.

Xenon Cart was co-produced with the help of my first hired help. Collaboration is important, two or more heads working towards the same goals has enabled my company to produce much more advanced website systems.

I simply don't believe that websites are just websites anymore. To be able to survive in today's world wide web they must become better designed, feature packed, more secure and consistently user friendly.

The internet is an exciting place to work in when you consider the rate at which it is evolving. From hardware like digital storage (now able to condense a vast virtual world into a space as tiny as a the tip of a pen) the time for creating sites that enjoy limitless storage and functionality is here. This teamed with developments in programming languages and the devotion of a couple of hundred thousand coders makes advanced website systems a reality.

Using Xenon Cart to help me with my e-commerce projects I was able to increase my productivity as it has everything my client needs to successfully sell products online, this helped my company concentrate on branding, and even promotion programmes for my clients.

I had been working from home for years. A new arrival forced me to consider commercial office space, a hugely beneficial risk that I feel has paid off and that now provides me with the environment I need to do my job.

The unit is within a creative enterprise building and the cool establishment is a pleasure to work in. We share the building with well known television production and design companies, it is the perfect place for someone as quirky as me.

At 25, I am still young and it is important to realize that you cant do everything on your own. I have to remain honest with myself and remember to outsource for better results when the occasion dictates.

It's almost impossible to keep up with the new techniques and even design trends implemented by the people who are in the know. Using specialists to create unusual projects isn't something to be ashamed of. I also pride myself on the fact that my quest for knowledge spurns me into actively searching for the new advancements and wanting to experiment with the array of different programming languages.

I have been me, this is my blog and it should help generate visitors to my site. Thats the vital promotion aspect that a website needs to gain exposure after all.

So, Can we take inspiration from technology? I certainly do.
